Skope interview

Skope has been smashing it for the last year since the release of his Razor Beam EP on Adapted records. On the day the new Casino EP is released on Caliber, here's an interview with the 5x UK Glitch Hop Awards Poll nominee...

Please introduce yourself....

My name is Alex AKA Skope from the UK in a small village near Reading.

How would you describe your style of music?

I try to write my music based on samples as much of possible to capture the same sort of sound as the hip hop i love to listen too. I like to blend this style of sampling with the modern production of loud drums and distorted basses.

You've got such a chunky bass sound, how on earth did you arrive at that?

A lot of experimentation basically. I like lots of distortion and filtering in different combinations but tend to experiment with any plugin at my disposal to try and keep developing new sounds and textures.

What first turned you onto this style of music? Any particular artists or tracks?

I’ve been listening to hip hop and funk for years before I properly discovered electronic music, at which point I really began to love the filthy side of things. But it wasn't until I heard Koan Sound’s "Mr Brown" that I tried putting the two together.

Then I discovered the works of Caliber Music and Adapted Records with artists like Kursa and Mako about 1 and a half years ago and started to think I could maybe do this neuro bass stuff if I put my mind to it.

What kit do you use?

I pretty much work in the box except for my Kaos pad which I love for adding some little fx towards the end of my projects. Just got some new adam a7x speakers which are amazing as well. Inside the box it is mainly Logic and a bit of Ableton. I like them both for different reasons and having the two helps me break through writers block and offers many more creative opportunities.

Plugins I like and use all the time are izotope, fabfilter, sonnox, waves, camel audio and native instruments. I also use a lot of addictive drummer to create my own drums without using samples.

What's the weirdest thing anyone's ever said about your music?

I’m sure there have been some silly comments on youtube, although I can’t remember any particular gems.

You've just got back from an Aussie tour (you lucky bastard!) how was it?

Amazing, great people, great parties and great weather. Can’t wait to get back out there!

What's the craziest gig you've ever played?

That would have to be Deliverance Festival in Australia. It was in the mountains surrounded by a kangaroo reservation. I was camping in a little meadow of mint and at one point during the festival a couple of ponies galloped through the dance floor much to my amazement!

Where do you like to play the most?

I really enjoyed playing at the festival, something about the outdoors which gives a great atmosphere, especially with a great sound system.

Who's inspiring you most at the moment?

I have two types of inspiration, in the sound design side of things Mefjus, Neosignal and Disprove are top notch at the moment.

When it comes to music I’m listening to lots of weird random music from the 70s and earlier, no particular artists but I love the crusty sound of an old record and I love finding rare little musical gems.

Who are you looking out for in 2013?

I think Haywyre is going to blow up even more next year, he definitely deserves it.

Disprove is another one to watch as well as Mefjus. Also I think Soma is highly underrated, all his work is great and he deserves to get a lot more recognition this year. Almost forgot MoodyGood as well. 16bit have been sorely missed so really excited to hear some new stuff from one half of my old favorite artist.

You've got a heavy new EP just about to drop on Caliber. It feels brassy. How would you say it's a development from your previous output?

There is a bit more variation on this EP I think. I got the chance to play with dubstep a bit more again which was a lot of fun. I put a lot more time into the little details that polish the music off so hopefully they sound more full and energetic.

What's your next project in the pipeline?

There are quite a few of different things in the pipeline actually. I have been making a lot more stuff with a bit more of a moody vibe than the funk I’ve been releasing lately. I have another EP with Adapted coming around spring hopefully. An EP with Disprove which has been a lot of fun to write. Some remixes for adapted for AU5 and Aberto. Collaborations with Mr Bill, Haywyre, Kursa and Stickybuds are all in progress too which are all pretty exciting as they are some of my favorite artists in the scene. Very busy at the moment to say the least!

Where are you looking forward to playing next?

I have a gig in Cornwall through the Glitch Shop guys which should be really fun. The wheels are in motion for a Canada tour as well which I’m pretty excited for too. Should hopefully be showing my face at a few festivals too. Already locked things in for Noisily this summer. Looks to be a busy year all round!

Distant Tremor presents a night of BASS! w/ AMB / Mouldy Soul / Quanta / EurythmY / ISO - @ Union, Vauxhall, Friday 29 March

We can't gush enough about how excited we are to see AMB back in London! Someone who could be seen alongside Tipper as one of the pioneers of what we now call glitch hop, Ambrus was living in London and making glitchy breaks way back in the day, founding Chi Recordings in 2000. He's since found himself at the head of a rapidly growing Hungarian glitch hop scene, while his live sets and production skills are in demand worldwide. (NB. His influence is probably bigger that we're even aware of - just check out the list of people he masters for here!)

As for Distant Tremors, it's brilliant to see the emergence of another glitch hop infused club night start up in London. Known for their club and squat parties in the London Psytrance scene, the guys behind Distant Tremor are trying something a little different for 2013 and have created a line up with a distinctly psychedelic mid-tempo flavour.

Quanta, another production whizz from South West Wales represents the trippy dub vibes of New Zealand's Enig'matik Records, while we're delighted to see Eurythmy getting a main room slot after first being introduced to his gorgeously melodic music by Mouldy Soul on Glitch.fm. Speaking of whom, if Mouldy Soul's set at ::Illumination:: on Saturday is anything to go by, he's going to blow the roof off at Union! We're also really looking forward to -ISO- (first played on Glitch.fm by the Morbidly Obese Midget), plus residents Atman Construct and Forever Blind who have been feeding quality glitch mixes into our Soundcloud group for the last year. Oh, and there's some short fat fellow playing too.

If you like your mid-tempo to be mind-tweaking, this is not to be missed!

So while were all back in the UK freezing our nuts off, Mouldy Soul's enjoying himself in the Aussie summer with the Adapted Records crew, eating shrimp off the barbie (we know it's true, it was in an Opiuo track), downing some kind of beer that definitely isn't F*sters and trying his hardest not to get a tan. 1st Feb - Sydney, @UFO Club with Mr Rogers, Mustard Tiger and Staunch

It's all about four-step garage...according to Spenghead

Yes it's true, glitch hop doesn't have to be 90-110bpm! It can be any tempo you like! Spenghead leads the way into 2013 with some distinctly neurofunk inflected future garage on Adpated Records. He's like so 2011. Oh and there's a 100bpm Cubism remix for those who can't handle the departure and a dirty Vortek version to confuse all the bro steppas.

Dephicit - Gutter Fruit EP (Adapted Records)

One half of Critical Cuts and a regular at Riddim Fruit nights in Exeter, James Stafford aka. Dephicit's been plugging glitch in the South West like a trooper for years. This debut EP for Adapted Records sees him really come into his own as a producer though, with plenty of crisp licks and skanks filling the fresh space that he's opened up around his trademark deep funk wobble. It all layers together beautifully building into an irresistible rolling bounce in Gutter Fruit, while the Kry Talk remix is just pure, sweet ear nectar. Mouldy Soul's remix takes a light touch that really compliment's the original track, whereas Mustard Tiger pumps the funk by introducing slap bass into the mix (of course). The cover art (a digital mushroom garden spacescape) by Point Zero One Productions is as gorgeous as the music. Essential release!

You can read our interview with Dephicit and download his Glitch.FM mixtape here.

Keep your ears peeled for more tunes on Riddim Fruit in the near future!

Skope - Razor Beam & Tryptich - Twister / Eucalyptus

So today's been branded Cyber Monday in the retail trade - the day that everyone buys their gifts online for a certain winter festival because they've just been paid. Now we're not suggesting that you follow the crowd, but with two long awaited mid-tempo EPs released today - Skope's Razor Beam on Adapted Records and Tryptich's Twister / Eucalyptus on Colony Productions - perhaps now IS this time to treat yourself to some early pressies...

The wait is over!! This is MakO's funky song... and Kursa + Blunt Instrument remixes of it

Coventry neuro producer MakO first teased us with this fluoro-funk brainsplurge and it's addictive vocal tick on Soundcloud eight months ago. Since then it's had 16,498 plays and 482 favourites on his stream alone. Now, after the longest ear-tease ever, you can finally get your sweaty paws on it thanks to Adapted Records, with tasty remixes by fellow Brit Kursa and Brisbane's Blunt Instrument to boot! The Blunts remix is a stripped back full-fat bass wobble, while Kursa oscarllates (geddit?) between floaty build ups and filthy high end bass massages, both keeping the essence of the original intact. The digital cover art by Point Zero Productions is delicious too. Good job Corey!

UK Glitch Hop on Glitch.FM #4: Mouldy Soul interview

With a series of releases on Colony Productions and BroKEn Records in the last few months, Mouldy Soul has already become a producer to watch in 2012. For his UK Glitch Hop debut he's going to be previewing an hour long live set and much, much more. Tune in 10pm-12am Wednesday 14 March or catch up on our archive here: http://soundcloud.com/ukglitchhop

Introduce yourself...

My name is Richard Carrigan and my stage name is Mouldy Soul

How would you describe your particular style of glitch?
The best description I've heard is: "This isn't dubstep; this is Marks and Spencer's dubstep." I'd say it was optimistic wobble funk with the occasional helping of self loathing step! I've also been described as a "Digital Hendrix"... but that was by me, just then.

What first turned you onto glitch hop and mid tempo? Any particular artists or tunes?
Basically the answer is Glade Festival fed me an Omelette and I liked it! A few years ago they had Spoonbill on the line up. Never heard his tunes before, found his myspace and fell in love with his sound almost instantly. I say almost as the first track I listened to was Woodenspoon and I didn't really know how to interpret it at the time, but after listening to a few more tunes like Mangle Boogie Bangle and Bunkerfunk, I quickly became familiar with his releases because everything he touches is gold!

Here's a few tunes that have given me so much joy:

From Spoonbill we found Opiuo and others like the Mollusk, Mr Bill and basically just fell in love with the musical output of Australia from then on! Their music was a breath of fresh air after being so heavily exposed to the dark and sinister sounds coming from the UK at the time.

Your first few releases were all through Colony Productions, the London label run by Crunch and Vent, which has some serious glitch pedigree. How did that come about?
I made Wine and Shine, sent it to a DJ mate (Dave Quextal) who is renowned for horribly criticising tracks, ended up getting some surprisingly nice feedback and he suggested a few labels to send it to. Sent it to a couple of labels, one of them was Colony, got some great feedback from them and they decided to release it.

You were sitting at the top of the Addictech charts for quite a while at the end of last year, how did that feel?
Almost as good as seeing a double rainbow :) I was really happy with the way the Hypersquelch ep went down, it was definitely a confidence booster as I doubted my own abilities way too much, also the feedback I receive from my awesome followers on Soundcloud has given me a great deal of confidence to be able to continue to push myself to achieve ever greater things. So here's a massive thank all of you!

What's the scene like where you are?
Idyllic countryside, sweet pastures and the smell of cow manure.

Where do you like to play the most?
Probably on the swings, or the roundabouts! On a decent sound system, preferably Opus or Funktion One's and definitely outdoors when it's sunny, but I haven't had the combined experience. I've had one of each, but not yet clasped the holy trinity!!!

What's the craziest gig you've ever played?
Latvia, I loved it there so much. It was an experimental mishmash of about twenty audio and visual artists from all over the world from Berlin to Bogota, we got together for a week of drunken partying and pulled off a magical collaborative party at the end. We had a giant thirty foot screen, loads of video projectors and 3D mapping awesomeness and hooked the visuals up to the Xbox kinnect so people could interact in real time with the visuals, that a was pretty wicked party to be a part of. It was crazy because it was the most disorganised chaotic event I've ever been a part of, but some how we managed to pull some order from the chaos and put on a really enjoyable party.

What's your favourite track at the moment?
Probably bubble control or lumpy haggis by Tipper, the guys sound design is out of this world, absolutely love everything he made previous but Bubble Control is next level stuff!

Who's inspiring you at the moment?
Too many to mention them all! Spoonbill, Ott, Opiuo, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Curtis Mayfield, Herbie Hancock, Shpongle, Tipper, Squarepusher, AFX, Hedflux, Bad Tango, Mr Bill, AMB.

Who are you looking out for in 2012?
AMB definitely, this guys production seems to get better every track, and great to hear someone grow into a sound.

Tipper's Puzzle Dust is gonna be awesome, Hedflux's full length album, Opiuo's Butternut Slap series, the glitch hop on Adapted Records; which is now the home of Mr Bill and some really cool newcomers like Mustard tiger, Lucky Hz and Goosebumpz who are all making amazingly cool stuff. Also looking forward to the new Hypnagog album, as his first one Dreaming in pieces was absolutely epic and free so go get it!!!

What new releases have you got in the pipeline?
Too many!! I'm really excited about a few remixes I'm doing for Mr Bill and AMB.

I've also got a few collabos brewing with the likes of Hedflux, Vent and K+Lab. Plus I've got an Ep 'The Harangu' that'll be on Colony, getting some really cool artwork done from this dude: http://ayalien.deviantart.com/

And I've also got a full length album planned called "One point make sense" that I'm pretty excited about, but I don't wanna give away too much just yet!!

Where can we see you playing next and over the summer?
I'm playing in Exeter at the Dark Knights Mega Rave at the end of this month. Headlining the bar area, which is being hosted by Riddim Fruit Records, then getting flown out to Italy, Bass invaders in Southampton, Bristol, and a couple of festivals such as the legendary Glade!

What have you got lined up for your first show on Glitch FM?
Something pretty special, an hour long live Mouldy Soul set, with a jazz guitarist, featuring some exclusive never heard before material, a guest mix from UK artist Eurythmy who makes some wicked Glitch/IDM music, some super hot promos from the UK underground and some fresh squelch from Bran Richards, Mustard Tiger and the elusive Swingesthesia. Should be worth tuning in for :)

Catch Mouldy Soul on Glitch.FM from 10pm-12am GMT Wednesday 7 March 2012.

Listen to the first three shows hosted by the Morbidly Obese Midget, Your Niece and William Breakspear at: http://soundcloud.com/ukglitchhop
