BEAT3 Interview

BEAT3 have had a stonking summer, rocking Uppercut, Glade and Secret Garden Party with their own three-way blend of glitch-hop, drumstep and funky bass flavours, plus some monster choons in the shape of Get the Money and Woo Ha. We caught up with the lads ahead of their latest Glitch.FM guest mix for UK Glitch Hop.

Please introduce yourselves….

We are a production & dj trio from South East England:
Arthur Tattersall aka. Kenny Keyskillz
Harry Tattersall aka. Unclebadtouch
Luke L-Biz Barton aka. Crunk Master Fucknutz

We have been making music & dj-ing individually for years and as BEAT3 since 2008.

How would you describe your particular style of bass music?

We try and forge our own path, but it’s based in part on the mid-range, synth-heavy sound of early glitch and modern dubstep, and everything between.  We try to make tunes with a certain sound rather than of a certain genre, but we have a broad range of interests between the three of us, covering pretty much every genre out there.  Hopefully that comes across.

What first turned you onto glitch music?

We’ve always been into Hip Hop, and we’ve always been into the broken beat sound from people like Tipper, Coldcut, DJ Food, Aphex, Amon Tobin etc etc.  We’re pretty old-school, but we love to hear progression in Hip Hop, like El-P’s experimental stuff from the Company Flow days, leading into the Def Jux era.  It seemed a natural progression to us when we first heard artists like the Glitch Mob combining huge Hip Hop beats with big synths and glitches.

What’s the scene like where you are?

Seems some of the local breaks nights are incorporating the glitchier sounds, which is good. There are a few Ghetto Funk/Glitch Hop nights popping up in the area. In London L-Biz has been playing a night called Love Filth on Thursdays in Camden Bar Vinyl. Its one of the few (if not only) nights we know of dedicated to all styles of the Glitch sound.

Where do you like to play the most?

Anywhere with a good sound team and lots of space, Uppercut nights & the Meteor Stage (at Glade this year) have set the bar pretty high! Festivals such as Glade & Secret Garden Party (The Drop) are always amazing and people are just so up for having a great time.

What’s the craziest gig you’ve ever played?

Probably the Lord Napier – it rained indoors, one of the generators backed up and filled the place with diesel fumes, and at several points there were speakers and cables partially submerged in water. With lots of laptops & controllers it wasn’t ideal but we still managed to throw down our set. At the other end of the scale Glade Meteor Stage was an amazing experience.  A UFO rising from a crater, epic sound system, and laser mapping in the woods!

Who’s inspiring you most at the moment?

MC2 are ticking all the right boxes, definitely looking forward to their new remix ep which has DCarls on it as well. Then there is heRobust – straight up sick with a unique sound.  Also couldn’t fail to mention DANk his latest release on Skanky Panky is obscene! Total Badman.

Who are you looking out for in 2012?

Shamanic Technology - he will be doing big things in 2012/13.
Skope - another producer with brilliant skills from our area, doing very well with big releases on Heavy Artillery.

What’s the next project in the pipeline?

Just finishing off a collaboration with the Swing & Bass monsters Dutty Moonshine & hopefully finishing off our own EP before the end of the year. Also getting some beats ready specifically for MCs that we have been tracking down.

Where are you playing over the winter?

We have a big Halloween Gig, ‘Alaween’ (facebook link later) where we are playing alongside Evil Nine, Kanji Kenetic, Dj Moneyshot and several others in Brixton on the 27th Oct with Wearealan.
L-Biz playing regularly at Love Filth with various guests on Thurdays in Camden at Bar Vinyl. Hopefully once everyone else is back from the Burn a few more things will be falling into place towards Christmas and the New Year.

Review - Uppercut: Bareknucle Bass, Hackney Wick, 10 March 2012

UK Glitch Hop editor Morbidly Obese Midget reviews Uppercut: Bareknucle Bass for Spoonfed, one of the few media outlets in the country with a dedicated interest in glitch hop, thanks largely to the efforts Editor-in-Chief Lowri Clarke. Check the links throughout!

Your Niece coming in your ears with sonic lazers
Glitch hop pretty much originated in the UK, so I’ve always been a bit puzzled as to why it’s never really taken off here. Uppercut is one of a number of nights burgeoning around the country that has set out not only to remedy this situation, but to raise the bar. With underfloor speakers.

How does that work in a Hackney Wick warehouse?! Well apparently the answer is to build a two tier pyramid-come-boxing ring that takes up most of the main room and stuff it with bass bins. As we arrive, Atomic Drop are demonstrating the Funktion-One system in full effect with their energetic dancehall, electro house and dubstep. You could feel your legs tremble the minute you set foot on the first tier, which turned into full shakes on the dance platform. There‘s no option but to dance, especially with these boys at the controls.

SixAM gets 'em bouncing
The first glitch hop DJ on the bill is SixAM, co-founder of Liverpool's Skanky Panky Records. For a brief moment at the start of his set, I wonder whether the audience is ready for mid-tempo in the main room at 2am, but as Buddha pulls out remixes of DJ Fresh, DJ Hype and Ray Charles the party really got going. Pretty soon the pyramid is packed with bodies popping and bumping to the jacking beats, with fresh dubs from Skanky Panky and big tunes from the likes of The Glitch Mob. The dancefloor is a melee of fur, animal tails and incredible patterned onesises. Secret Garden Party goers would feel quite at home.

L-Biz on the ones and twos (in a pimped-out 1960s spaceship)
Being Hackney Wick, I’d been expecting a rather grimier warehouse, but the Autumn Street Studios are a surprisingly nice conversion with friendly bouncers, affordable drinks and plenty of space to dance. The second room, hosted by Tell Tails, resembles a graffiti jam disguised as a festival tent - the perfect setting for an old skool scratch set from L-Biz of Beat3. It’s further enhanced by some rather talented girls with hoop that looks like it’s been forged from pure rainbows.

Escaped rainbows sighted in Hackney
Back in the main room, the ceiling sweat showers have already started, whilst Head of State breaks out of filthy d'n'b into a particularly fat remix of Jump Around. As if we have any choice. Outside, in the shadow of the Olympic Park, smokers lounge on bare-spring sofas and crouch on fire escape steps.
Your Niece paints with his face
UK Glitch Hop and Uppercut resident, Your Niece has been pioneering crunk in the UK for years and his opening set for Bassnectar at Secret Garden Party last year completely blew me away, so I’m really looking forward to seeing him. He doesn't disappoint, carrying the ever-energetic crowd on a bass odyssey into the morning, from popping glitch to carpet bombing bass. Psymbionic's Intergalactic remix has the whole floor bouncing like mad, as do fresh tunes from Akira Kiteshi, Ben Samples and Bassnectar, and the odd snatches of familiar riff form the likes of Muse. Lazer noises in the music are sketched out by real ones, strafing the smoke-filled air with coloured shapes and beams.
Beat3 "I can hear Britney"
By the time Bournemouth producers Beat3 take the stage, dawn’s already filtering through the skylights. On laptops, pads and decks, playing lots of original tunes as well as recent releases from Koan Sound, DCarls and Adapted Records, their bouncy funk hop is the perfect end to the night. As party goers drop into cuddle puddles at the back of the vibrating stack, a spilled drink on the stage at the front dances in ripples and spikes with every thump of the bass.

Free back massage
The Uppercut crew recently announced a ridiculous glitch hop line-up for The Meteor Stage at Glade Festival, hosted by themselves, Skanky Panky, Donky Pitch, Jump Music and Colony Productions, with headliners including Ben Samples, VENT, Akira Kiteshi, Slugabed, Zen Death Squad, Memory 9 and Koan Sound. If this is just a small taste things to come, I'm going to have to get in training."

UK Glitch Hop on Glitch FM #2: Your Niece interview

Ahead of his first radio show for UK Glitch Hop on Glitch.FM, we caught up with bare-knuckle-crunk fighter Your Niece. Tune into Glitch.fm tonight from 10pm-12am GMT (party in the chat room!) or listen again at soundcloud.com/ukglitchhop

Introduce yourself...
My name is Rhys Clarke, better known by my DJ moniker Your Niece.

How would you describe your particular style of glitch hop?
I like the edgy more aggressive crunk influenced stuff. I guess you could say tunes with a bit of swagger. I use a lot of acapellas in my sets to thread different styles like dnb, electro and dubstep together. Before I'd ever heard of glitch-hop I was a sucker for any kind of rapping over dance tracks.

What first turned you onto crunk and glitch hop? Any particular artists or tracks?
In 2007 my friend came back from Burning Man talking about this thing 'glitch-hop'. He mentioned the the names Bassnectar and the Glitch Mob. As soon as I heard West Coast Rocks I knew that was the sound I wanted to play.

What's the scene like where you are?
I've been playing glitch-hop for about 4 years now and I'm really surprised how new it still is to a lot of people in the UK. There are now some really good labels dedicated to the sound and you can definitely hear it's influence bleeding into other styles whether people know it came from glitch-hop or not. We've just started a night called 'Uppercut' which will be one of the first glitch-hop specific nights in London so watch this space.

Where do you like to play the most?
I'd have to say at the Secret Garden Party Festival. I've played there for the past 6 years and I've grown with the festival, each year getting to play to a bigger crowd. The set I got to play before Bassnectar last year was pretty career-defining.

What's the craziest gig you've ever played?
Secret Garden Party put on a big Valentines Ball in this huge swanky venue (a boutique hotel in Brixton). They opened up the whole place including some bedrooms at the back and gave me a huge sound system and the keys to the master bedroom. I'd just started playing glitch-hop out so it was really exciting seeing the look on people's faces when an edIT tune dropped. It got totally out of hand, the 4-poster bed got flattened, the plasma tv smashed and their was an orgy in the hot-tub. Just like a rap music video!

What's your favourite track at the moment?
Probably 'Glass Bong' by Stagga and Monky, two producers from Wales, which, incidentally is where I'm originally from.

Who's inspiring you at the moment?
I'm loving some the stuff that the German label Robox Neotech is putting out. Experimental but still retaining the danceable hip-hop energy.

Who are you looking out for in 2012?
The guy that features in my first show Shamanic Technology has been working like a madman in the studio and has piles of fresh stuff he'll be unleashing which is sure to cause an impact. He's already getting recognition stateside picking up sets at Burning Man this year. Beat3 are another name to watch closely, they've got an imminent release on the Muti label and some exciting sounding collaborations in the pipeline.

Where can we expect to see you playing next and over the summer?
It's always busy with festival bookings over summer. Glade and Secret Garden Party I'm particularly excited about as I'm helping program a new venue that will be tying in with the 'Uppercut' night we've just started in London. I'm headlining Uppercut's Bare Knuckle Bass on 10 March vs. Head of State and alongside Sweet Jesus, Atomic Drop, Beat3 and SixAM.

What have you got lined up for your first show on Glitch FM?
I've got an all-originals guest mix from Shamanic Technology and getting excited about the line-up for Uppercut's area at Glade festival which is utterly ridiculous.

Catch Your Niece on Glitch.FM from 10pm-12am GMT Wednesday 29 February 2012. For an archive of UK Glitch Hop on Glitch.FM go to soundcloud.com/ukglitchhop
