Review: The Glitch Mob / Opiuo / Your Niece @ The Forum, Kentish Town, London, 30 May 2014

Mike Wabro (glitchrate) reports on The Glitch Mob's Love Death Immortality Tour from a sweat-soaked Forum. Opiuo and our kid Your Niece in support.

We arrive at The Forum just in time to catch the end of Your Niece’s first opening set of the night. It seemed like he had set a great tone for the night’s events.

London goes mad for Opiuo

Kiwi glitch-hop don, Opiuo was next to hit the stage and was greeted with a huge reception from the crowd. Boasting a new live setup replete with laptop, controller, mixer, fresh drum-pad & his big orange drum-sticks, he began knocking out the beats live over his set - moving swiftly into, and mixing seamlessly between, some of the new corkers like 'Clumpy Cider', 'Snorkle' and 'Misty Digit' from his latest album, Meraki. His staple crowd favourite remixes of Koan Sound and Ray Charles got the, now nearly full, dance-floor vibing, bums shaking to his infectious stage energy. As ever, he kept his set diverse and fun - effortlessly spanning between tempos and styles - yet always with that trademark, cheeky, super funked-up Opiuo sound we have grown to love so much. After a set filled with more funky fun than you can shake a glitchy stick at, the whole place was buzzing with anticipation of The Glitch Mob.

Mike & Donna during Opiuo’s set

Your Niece got his second sneaky 15 minute set of the night on after that, whilst the stage was set for the mighty Mob, starting with Boards Of Canada’s 'Dayvan Cowboy'. The dancefloor started cramming fuller than a sardine can. As I was pressed hard against the front side wall of the live mixing desk area, I realized then that the dancefloor had not actually been full at all until that point. I wondered again why they chose The Forum over Electric at Brixton- as they did on their last tour. Crowd dispersion, sound system, & room acoustics all seemed to suffer somewhat at The Forum.

The lights dimmed. That sudden feeling of being at a massive rock gig- crowd screaming with all hands in the air as Ooah, Boreta & ediT walked onto the stage. As the stunning lazer light show began, the mysterious cover was drawn away, to reveal the massive silhouettes of their awesome new drums- looking like an HR Geiger inspired fusion of a jumbo jet engine and a Kyoto Drum. Each of them had the same setup in front of them, with the massive drum behind them, another electronic kit below that, & a pillar in front with 4 ipad-like screens in each, angled down facing towards the crowd- on which they played most of the riffs live, in divided colour quadrants that lighted up each time they did.

The energy was immense as they began pounding their drums with explosive visuals to the tune of the epic, ‘Drive Like You Stole It’, from their previous album, 'Drink The Sea'. Surrounded by such a diversely eclectic array of people, made for an electrically inclusive atmosphere. Their grueling schedule of almost a show in a different country every alternate day, had clearly done nothing to hamper their energetic spirit and passion for their sound, and the love for their fans.

I must confess that by that stage, the rounds of beer & shots in-between in celebration of my extended birthday, had started taking effect as the specifics of which track was which, became somewhat blurred- especially since they were mixing tracks into one another. All the epic bangers: the old & a lot of the new off their latest seminal album, ‘Love Death Immortality’. I was fully enveloped in their performance. I remembered the contrast of seeing them in their very early days on their first ever UK visit in 2008- in the very shanty surroundings of the Rhythm Factory. That was like sitting on a couch in someone’s over-sized living room, watching a bunch of guys having fun mixing tunes up all-over each other on one controller. This, in contrast, was like an extremely tight and flawless extravaganza of sound and visual orgasm! The Glitch Mob are undeniably a powerful force now, entirely unique with their own take on that infamous big West Coast Lazer Crunk Metal sound- yet always relevant & nodding to the current sound.

twitter.com/theglitchmob
After their last song, it did not take long for them to be screamed back on stage for an encore, dropping one of my favourites, 'We Can Make The World Stop' - which seemed like a climax for the crowd- with extra high crowd jumping & fist pumping action. They ended with the new rework of 'West Coast Rocks' - to huge standing applause and Glitch Mob finger signs. They seemed so happy, taking a moment to take a bunch of selfies against the backdrop of the crowd, while Boreta took to the mic & confessed how much it meant to them to have so much love & appreciation from the UK crowd- as all their influences came from UK.

facebook.com/theglitchmob
This was my third time watching The Glitch Mob preform over the years; and they certainly didn’t disappoint. I had to buy a T-shirt this time- purely on the basis that my T-shirt was utterly sweat-drenched.

Mike & Lizzy after the show
To round things up, Your Niece took back to the decks, keeping the remaining crowd moving to some fresh ghetto bassy trap and dubstep. A brilliant night all-round.

Beats Antique interview

London's conscious party scene turned out in force for Beats Antique's stomping UK debut at :::Illumination::: last month. We caught up with the West Coast band to ask how they found it, and when they're coming back!

Please introduce yourselves...

Sidecar Tommy and David Satori from Beats Antique.

How would you describe your style of music?

Our style of music is combinations of old and new, opposites - electronic and gypsy DIY...taking experimental electronic music and wrapping in an orchestra!

Have you ever been to London or the UK before? How did you find it?

Have been before, but in this fashion, we are fortunate enough to have a bit of a following of people who have only been able to listen to our music as opposed to seeing us live, so we were able to run around with fans and ultimately have a blast with new friends! Our show was super fun and we can't wait to get back to the wondrous UK!

What's the scene like where you are?

Because this is the home of Burningman, there are lots of freaks, parties, fundraisers for Burningman camps, etc, so it has become a prevalent hub for electronic music producers with the likes of Bassnectar, Eskmo, Glitch Mob, to name a few that started here.

What's the craziest gig you've ever played?

I would say our first set at Burningman two years ago was bonkers, some say 20,000 people were there, such a crazy opportunity.

What first turned you onto this style of music? Any particular artists or tracks?

Amon Tobin put forth some amazing reworks of cinematic orchestral pieces that inspired me as a producer, along with DJ Krush from Japan - he taught me a lot back in the day...I used to ride my bike around New York City with my headphones on listening to what was the beginnings of abstract hip hop...a lot of the same ideas that were sprouting up back then still ring true today - make a sick beat, cut up a melodic sequence, and layer killer bass and atmospheric tones...

Who's inspiring you at the moment?

We feel fortunate to have amazing friends as our inspiration! The electronic music scene is very supportive and has so many talented producers that we've been able to get to know. For Example. TIPPER, Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation, Apparat, ESKMO and many others. We also get inspiration from singer songwriters like Fiest, Bon Iver, Yeasayer, Lynx and many more.

Who are you looking out for musically in 2013?

LADY GAGA and KATEY PERRY! watch out DAVID BOWIE

For all the tech geeks out there - what kit do you use?

Mac tower, Ableton Live, Ableton Push, UAD plugins, Moog little phatty, Moog Slim Phatty, Micro Korg, Roland octapad, Kaosilator, Tama Starclassic drums, Roland vdrums, Akai Midi controllers, iPad, Turntable, Cdj, Battery, Kontact, Maschine, Dave Smith Mopho, Roland Handsonic...etc etc

What's the next project in the pipeline?

At the moment we are working on a new album due out in the fall, with a new show to go with it! Very excited about this one!

Where are you most looking forward to playing next?

We would love to come back to the UK! There is a lot of music lovers there! Hopefully we will be at some Festivals in 2013. Lets keep our fingers crossed !

Has Zoe taught you how to belly dance yet?

It's actually the other way around,we taught Zoe everything she knows!!!
(M.O.M: We're going to get the guys prove that next time they're here!)

Review: Koan Sound / Opiuo / ARP101 / Asa & Sorrow @ Jacks Club, London, 28 March 2013

“How was Bristol last night?” I ask Opiuo just before he plays. “It was incredible, one of the best shows I've played in ages” he enthuses. A home town return show for Koan Sound after two successive tours to the US and Canada, the after party was apparently pretty good by all accounts too. "Lots of our friends were out" Will from Koan tells me, grinning. London has a lot to live up to, but with a line up like tonight's it shouldn't have much trouble.

When we arrive with the UK Glitch Hop crew, Inspected Records’ Asa and Sorrow are playing to a dark, half-filled tunnel. We can only make out their silhouettes bobbing against minimal smoky purple back lighting. The music is deep and rhythmic, like everything dubstep used to be before it got angry and abused. Riddims keep building and layering throughout the rest of set. It’s impossible not to dance. I’d expected something more mellow, but am entirely satisfied with the energetic intricacy of what I get served. The tunnel fills up.

Next up is ARP101, someone I’ve been hoping to see since around this time last year when he released a few 80s infused synth-funk mid-tempo tracks. A bit like Bobby Tank a year ago, the first half of the set sounds distinctly West Coast. Lots of head nodding, popping, sluggish beats and Joker-esque purple sounds and washing synths. Heaven. The second part of the set falls into a bit of a trap, and I am ever so slightly disappointed not to hear more of last year’s boogified funk, but then that’s always the trouble with bringing expectations to the party. Tastes change.

“This is all a 100% original material” (or something to that effect) announces Opiuo as he takes the stage, and the energy switches straight up the minute the first stacks of bouncing funk jack in. You quickly get the feeling that this is the most fun dance music being played in any club in the world right now. So fat you need a machete to slice it. The place goes nuts to Ray Charles re-funked. Opiuo dances around behind the controls like a kid on a mini trampoline, drumsticks in hand. He uses them to effect on the pads in the build-up for ‘Robo Booty’. Some of the crowd may have discovered Opiuo for the first time through his Sly Fox remix for Koan Sound and there’s certainly a big cheer of recognition in the room when it comes in; the first sniff of the headliners to follow.

“Are you ready to slow it down now?” he asks about two thirds of the way through. This is where the soul flavour really comes in, with all the vocal tracks from the recent Butternut Slap series. At some point there’s an ipad making noises. The climax comes with a Slurp and Giggle album track as the crowd lose their shit to the squelching skank of ‘Lost Moinal’. “Keep it moving like libation”. Then the jokes humour of Pharcyde’s ‘Yo Mamma’s So Fat’ rounds off the set with some good times 90s hip hop flavour.

The room's got almost as much raw, wall-busting, sweatbox energy as Oscar’s first London appearance at Whomp in October, but the bigger crowd is more reflective of his talent and he’s loving every minute of it as much as we are.

Jim and Will from Koan Sound haven’t left the stage all this time, enjoying the spectacle as much as anyone else. I’d heard that they tend to DJ sets rather than live, but that's often the case for acts just a few EPs in. I’m expecting them to be brilliant, ranging from from dubstep to d’n’b, but I’m still surprised and delighted by the variety, speed and effortless flow that follows. Staring off in mid-tempo territory, it’s not long before we hit classics by Habstrakt and Tipper, then change down into trap, the two step of Culprate’s ‘Two’, his remix of Freq Nasty’s ‘Dread at the Controls’, up into Reso, Snoop and Dre, ‘Funkblaster’, Foreign Beggars, Teknian, Om Unit’s ‘Kramphaft’ refix, ‘Meanwhile’, Beasties, ‘80s Fitness’.

This might sound like a now familiar list of classics, but the set constantly shifts, comfortably skipping around tempos and style, never standing still. The impression is of impeccable wide-ranging taste and tight skills honed over the recent months on the road. In the middle of all this Opiuo launches himself off the stage into the waiting hands below and crowd-surfs to the middle of the room.

The last 20 minutes has everyone dancing their socks off to shakin’ d’n’b and neurofunk. Never boring, always interesting. Right on point.

You can’t help but be excited by whatever’s next for Koan Sound (An album? Live show? A cross genre EP?) They've certainly proved that they've got the talent to join their heroes Opiuo and Noisia on the world stage and enough fans already to be able to showcase their friends to new audiences in the UK and overseas. Here’s hoping that they continue to get the support which has seen the likes of OSWLA label boss Skrillex take it interstellar. “This one is about to drop.”

Distant Tremor presents a night of BASS! w/ AMB / Mouldy Soul / Quanta / EurythmY / ISO - @ Union, Vauxhall, Friday 29 March

We can't gush enough about how excited we are to see AMB back in London! Someone who could be seen alongside Tipper as one of the pioneers of what we now call glitch hop, Ambrus was living in London and making glitchy breaks way back in the day, founding Chi Recordings in 2000. He's since found himself at the head of a rapidly growing Hungarian glitch hop scene, while his live sets and production skills are in demand worldwide. (NB. His influence is probably bigger that we're even aware of - just check out the list of people he masters for here!)

As for Distant Tremors, it's brilliant to see the emergence of another glitch hop infused club night start up in London. Known for their club and squat parties in the London Psytrance scene, the guys behind Distant Tremor are trying something a little different for 2013 and have created a line up with a distinctly psychedelic mid-tempo flavour.

Quanta, another production whizz from South West Wales represents the trippy dub vibes of New Zealand's Enig'matik Records, while we're delighted to see Eurythmy getting a main room slot after first being introduced to his gorgeously melodic music by Mouldy Soul on Glitch.fm. Speaking of whom, if Mouldy Soul's set at ::Illumination:: on Saturday is anything to go by, he's going to blow the roof off at Union! We're also really looking forward to -ISO- (first played on Glitch.fm by the Morbidly Obese Midget), plus residents Atman Construct and Forever Blind who have been feeding quality glitch mixes into our Soundcloud group for the last year. Oh, and there's some short fat fellow playing too.

If you like your mid-tempo to be mind-tweaking, this is not to be missed!

Elixir of Life presents :: Illumination :: Beats Antique LIVE / Gaudi / Bird of Prey / Mouldy Soul / Kursa / Nimbus @ The Coronet, London, Saturday 16 March 2013

Hailing from Oakland, CA, Beats Antique was one of the first acts associated with glitch hop to really think about their live show. In fact, they started with it. Fronted by gorgeous bellydancer Zoe Jakes, the group with David Satori and Sidecar Tommy was originally formed to create music that matched her dancing - a blend of tribal, popping and jazz. Since the release of 2009 album Collide, their eastern influenced clockwork glitch hop and steampunk aesthetic have seen them established as favourites of the Burning Man community and an essential soundtrack for just about every bellydancer and fire performer on the planet...and now they're finally coming to the UK to play a one off show with Bird of Prey at The Coronet in London on Saturday 16 May!

Other live glitch hop acts have graced these shores before - namely The Glitch Mob and to a certain extent Opiuo - but what makes this significant is that it's hosted by a psychedelic party promoter. There have always been strong links between the European psychedelic party scene and that of America's West Coast, with Elixir of Life, the promoters behind ::: Illumination :::, doing more than anyone recently to bring the visionary art of Android Jones and co to our shores (check out the gallery line-up below). With a few exceptions though, such as Bluetech, The Human Experience and Nagual Sound Experiment, the music has remained a little out of sync. While the Americans and Aussies have been exploring the psychedelic potential of dubstep, bass and glitch, since the wax and wane of psydub our conscious parties have mostly been clinging onto the relentless march of psytrance to keep the main room dancefloor moving. A shame considering the diverse roots of psychedelic music in this country.

The main room line up here, however, is going to be a little bit different, with Gaudi launching a new album alongside live favourites The Egg. Even better news is that there's a whole room dedicated younger home grown glitch hop, neuro hop and mid tempo acts, headlined by Slackbaba but with Mouldy Soul, Kursa and Nimbus all on the bill too. Slackbaba remixed and produced Nimbus' debut EP, which came out in January, while fellow veteran producer Gaudi regularly plays tracks by Mouldy Soul.

The potential of this night as a shift in focus for the UK psychedelic party scene is significant. It looks like the best event of its kind since Hallucinogen in Dub and Younger Brother played Brixton Academy in 2007. Oh, and there's a whole gallery of mind-blowing visionary art. Not to be missed!
